The Nurburgring is a very dangerous place......
More so for bikes than cars ...... July 7th 2002 saw it claim one of my close friends....Joerund Seim....an he was known as one of the guys who was widely consdiered to have mastered the ring. Personally I have had a few lucky escapes, having been airlifted to hospital once after crashing on gravel left by a car and also 5 days in intensive care and a fractured spine after crashing on an oil spill. Aswell as narrowly missing spinning cars, other fallen bikers in the middle of the road, and one huge scary moment when I ran through some dropped oil at high speed at Flugplatz...
In the guesthouse we have a map of the ring, and ask anyone who stays and has an 'oh shit' moment to sign it..to be a testament and a warning to people when they stay...and it is getting full Please keep in mind that 1. It is a public road, and therefore all German road laws apply. (Lights, indicators, Mirrors, road legal exhausts, V5, insurance, MoT. Basically No race bikes/slick tyres) 2. IT IS NOT A TRACK DAY. There are no run off areas, gravel traps or marshalls Only Armco and it hurts. It can take up to 30 minutes before an ambulance may get to you....Think about it... 3.There is always another lap....Driver/rider etiquette can sometimes be very poor...Do not take risks, especially when overtaking just to make it back to the carpark 10 seconds quicker. Only overtake on the left 4. Personally I don't see the point in timing laps...You don't win anything...ride/drive and have fun. The only clock you need to watch is the one that makes sure you get back on your ferry to go home....and you can't do that from Adenau Hospital. 5. If you are at the ring with a large group of friends, I strongly recommend that you only ride the ring in groups of 2 or 3.In large groups you cannot concentrate on what you are doing. or see what is coming at you from behind..There are a lot of VERY quick cars on the circuit 6. Be aware of the rules of the road. These are displayed on the sign board next to the ticket machine in the carpark. The main one to remember is: Only overtake/be overtaken on the LEFT. No overtaking on the right. Keep a good eye on your mirrors and allow faster traffic to pass on the left Use your right hand indicator to let other road users know you have seen them. If you do not have time to look in your mirrors, then slow down to give youself the time to be able to be aware of what is going on around you. Above all remember that you are on HOLIDAY and your main objective is to have FUN. It is no fun for anyone to end up in hospital or in some cases dead....think about your actions to prevent this happening and ruining your's and others trip to the ring......!!!!!
